2 Cleaning Tips for the Master Bedroom

When it comes to home improvement or housework, organizing is the biggest challenge for most people.  The master bedroom is a good place to start if you are considering getting your home in order.  This is because it often becomes a catch-all for things that don’t have anywhere to go.  Out of season clothes get stored here, books that don’t have shelves, even electronics, mail, and magazines seem to find a cozy home in the master bedroom at times.

The bedroom becomes a problem if we don’t make a point of keeping it in order.  Most people only go into the master bedroom to sleep or put away laundry.  We don’t spend the waking hours in there that we do in the living room, office or kitchen, so the master bedroom often gets neglected because we don’t have to look at it.

A good place to start is storage.  You need to find room for all of those out of season clothes, magazines, mementos, books, and craft supplies.  It is perfectly fine to keep all of these things in the bedroom, but you need to acknowledge that you are going to keep them here, and make a space for them.

You will need shelves for books.  Get shelves deep enough that you can also use them for storing random small items.  Bins and baskets can be put on the shelves and hold all of those little extras, like mementos, batteries, your video camera, and other little things that keep ending up in your bedroom.

A desk is great to have in the master bedroom.  You can keep mail and other important papers private by keeping them in the bedroom instead of out in an office area that is more public.  Your desk can also be used for craft supplies, a sewing machine, or an extra computer.  If you have a lot of stuff to store, consider adding some cabinets around the desk area.  Many people are able to utilize a corner unit and store a lot of stuff in a small, usable area.

The last thing to organize in your bedroom is the closet.  Clothes hangers should match so that they hang straight.  This will keep your clothes from becoming wrinkled and save you from having to re-iron them later.  Hangers should be made to fit the clothes that you’re hanging on them.  For example, a coat hanger is curved to help wool coats and suits hold their shape.  A wood hanger is not only beautiful, but sturdy and smooth enough to use on a lot of different types of clothes.

Add shelving and a space for a laundry basket to the closet by getting shoes onto a shoe rack, luggage stored up high, and blankets stored in vacuum sealed bags.  With just a few touches, you can have your closet and your entire master bedroom organized and easy to keep that way.

Here are some suggestions:

1. Talk to your parents about it and see if they can talk to him about how you like your space and he can come in , but he has to leave it the way it was.

2. Tell your brother I love you , but this is my room and if you want to play with me then I can come to your room since I like to keep my room clean, ok so please respect my privacy.

3. Reward him (not big just something small) if he does listen.

4. Maybe put a lock on your door.

5. Ask him why he comes in, he may want to spend time with his big brother so make sure you play a game with him or something once in a while .

6. Put an alarm near the door so it will set off when he opens the door.

I hope I helped.

Just talk to him and I'm sure you can resolve it.

Best of luck

I know how annoying it can be. I share a room and my bro's always make it a mess again!

i been doing tile 4 a log time shit i make good money i recommend every one to try to do it

The right way to do it? EEK!

Nothing about that tile installation was even remotely close to being “right”.

Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the Durock cement board they used. Nowhere does it say, construction adhesive is the “right” way to install their cement board.

Furthermore, cement board installed directly over a plank subfloor is a no no. They should have installed a layer of plywood minimum 3/8″, preferably 1/2″ or better.

I totally understand where you're coming from! I wont get into details about my living arrangements, but it can be hard for me too sometimes. But my mother never lets things get to this point. The secret is to throw things out! If A) you look at it and wonder why you brought/have it B) don't know what its for C) know you will never need/wear/use it and d) don't have any sentimental feelings/ memories attached to said item(s) toss it! Some people have a hard time parting with things, even if its just junk. I would know, i had the same problem for a couple of years. But being an extreme pack rat not only clutters your home, but your mind too, and it isn't very healthy either! My suggestion is to approach first your mother about it, then your father. talk to them about how you feel about all of this and if they say that they don't have any time to clean up stuff, volunteer to do it yourself! A) it will make you look great and B) giving the house a good cleaning is awesome exercise heehee. Throw on some old clothes, get yourself a pair of those nifty yellow rubber gloves, and a dozen very hefty black garbage bags (clear works great too if you plan on separating things into giant piles to later organize). Start out with the room you and your sister share. It only take three seconds to figure out if you'll need something or not. Once it goes in the bag, don't look back! Then venture into your brothers room (if you're not scared of being swallowed whole by old gym socks and stale food wrappers). Tell them what your mission is and either give them bags to toss junk into or maybe do it yourself…this is where those gloves come in handy! Do this with all of the bedrooms and the living room. Before tackling the garage and maybe the attic, go around the house with one of the bags and toss in any old junk you find. Look in all the drawers and throw out old mail, brochures, report cards, newspapers, stuff like that. Getting rid of even the small things like this help a great deal, don't you notice how much brighter things are getting by now? After you've done a lot of the work inside the house, snap on your helmet and travel downstairs. If you find things down there that you don't want/need but you honestly think that they can be of some type of use, either donate it or have a garage sale! Yes, yes it may be a little bit of work organizing a sale or finding places to donate things too, but in the end you'll feel great. Just think of the money you can make, or the less fortunate people you could be helping :) Same thing applies for the attic too. You just might discover room that you never noticed was there before. After getting all of this done i guarantee a healthier and even happier home. Just make sure to take steps to keep things from reaching this near crisis point again hehe. I do hope that i've helped you even in the smallest bit, let me know how things work out. And good luck!

sounds just awful!

You might need to rip out the carpet. I don't think I would waste money on getting it cleaned. The smell is probably in the carpet padding and it will never come out with carpet cleaning.

Wash the walls with a strong solution of vinegar and water. Afterwards, I would prime and paint the walls.

If there is hard wood flooring, get it as clean as possible, you may want to fine sand it down and put a fresh coat of sealer.

Keep the windows open and air out the house as best you can.

I had an elderly relative living with me and for some reason her room had a nasty odor. After she left, the odor stayed and it was very hard to get rid of. It was in everything. We had to throw out the mattress and I washed the comforter at least three times.

I opened the windows and kept them open 24/7, threw out the rug, washed and painted the walls and washed the floor. The smell faded. 4 years later, it is finally gone!

Good luck.

Make a pile of throw aways and don't look back. get your daughter and boyfriend to help pack and any neighbors/friends to pack and mark boxes. Plan on eating out and just leave out the basics. Paper plates, plastice forks so forth. one tube of toothpaste and so forth. Make sure the essentials are packed last so you can get to them first on the unload side. Make sure boxes are labeled with a good expination as to what is inside. You probably should get in touch with a storage unit where you are going.

This is what I tell my seller's about the open house:

Make sure it is clean, clean, clean. Declutter and depersonalize, you are moving anyway, so you might as well start packing now.

Fresh flowers are nice, but how about flowering plants instead? They'll last longer and there might be subsequent showings.

Candles are nice, but don't use them in the same room as your flowers. I agree with Landlord, if you overdo on the candles, it can be a bad thing.

While I am on the track of competing smells, with cookies, you are now going to have 3 competing smells, flowers, candles and cookies. Pick two.

I recently held an open house where the homeowner did a really nice job of prepping for it. She painted a very loud wall a more neutral color, got rid of some of the furniture in a cluttered room, took down the wall of family photos, put up a few scenic pictures, bought a new bedroom set and curtains for a bedroom that needed it. She overdid the candles, so we blew some out. She had a nice table with coffee, water, a few different creamers and types of sweetener, baked muffins, and people lingered in the kitchen awhile enjoying the refreshments, which we wanted, since the kitchen was a great feature of the home.

The house sold to a couple that came to the open house.

Good luck with your open house, I hope it is a success.
