I've been there–here's my advice:
If you haven't for a while, check with your phone company to see if DSL is still unavailable, and, if it is, ask if they have any plans to make it available in your area anytime soon. DSL availability is spreading quickly, and if you can get it, DSL will likely be your fastest and cheapest option.
No DSL? Been there too. If you aren't satisfied with satellite (and I don't blame you–the lag, or 'latency', is just one of the problems with satellite internet), then I think you're on the right track; you probably should look into a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider), which use microwave frequencies. WISP coverage isn't nearly as widespread as satellite's, but if you can get it, a WISP is often cheaper and faster than satellite–and no latency. And since you have a line of sight to a 'fairly large city', your chances aren't too bad.
But even if there is a WISP in your area, it may take some work to find it. A pretty good place to start is the WISP Directory (http://www.wispdirectory.com ), but it isn't perfect. Most providers offer service to multiple areas but are listed under only one, so you should look into providers that are listed anywhere close to you (at least 30 miles to be thorough). Most have coverage maps on their websites, but these are usually only rough estimations. If you find one that looks close, you can contact them and they'll usually do a free site survey if they think you may be close enough.
The WISP Directory is far from complete, though. In fact, my WISP isn't even listed (I found mine through a local business that uses it). You can also try the website below, or try googling 'wisp internet [city or county near you] [your state]' to find a WISP.

If you can't find any WISPs that are close enough, you may not be totally out of luck. You could look into something like Verizon's BroadbandAccess or Sprint's Mobile Broadband (though these may not be as reliable as the other options), Broadband over Power Lines [BPL] (though this is very rare), and possibly what I found below (though I was unable to find much information about it).
